Expected Use:

The main navigation (G002) is the white bar at the top of the screen immediately underneath the black utility bar (G004). This section of the header is meant to feature the primary navigation (G003/G003B) of the site, search functionality and shopping cart (where applicable).

On emerson.com, the main navigation starts with the Emerson logo on the far left which is the site anchor linked to the homepage. For other sites it will be their name or logo with the same purpose. Next is the primary navigation. This is the two-level navigation (G003) on emerson.com and the single-level navigation (G003B) on all other approved sites.

On the right side you will usually see the search bar (magnifying glass) aligned on the right side with a shopping cart as the last item right aligned (where applicable).

How to Build the Main Navigation:

Regardless of which site you are working on, you will create a Collection with the Layout Variant G002. This Collection is placed as the second item in the Header Placement on the Homepage of your site. The G002 layout variant and some of the items you add which have their own layout variants will control the specific styling behavior for the overall G002 Main Navigation.

For emerson.com:

The main navigation on emerson.com is owned by Corporate Marketing. Please contact Corporate Marketing with any questions or needs regarding the main navigation. While Corporate Marketing owns the main navigation, each of the platforms owns and is responsible for their menu design and content (the second level of the G003 Two-Level Menu.) The contents are both left and right aligned depending on what is added and how it is styled by the respective layout variant. The main Items in the Items List for the G002 Collection are:

  • The first Item is the Logo for the business or the Emerson Helix logo. This is a Teaser with:
    • Teaser Target - Your Site Homepage
    • Picture - Your Logo or the Emerson Helix
    • Layout Variant - Set to G020
  • The second Item is the Primary Navigation (G003) Collection
  • The second to last Item in the Item List (second from right) is Search. This is an Action document type that has the ID set to "wcsextendedsearch". This is controlled by system code and is not directly editable by an author.
  • The last Item in the Item List (rightmost entry on the main nav) is the Shopping Cart. This is an Action document type that has the ID set to "wcMiniCart". This is controlled by system code and is not directly editable by an author.

For other approved sites:

While the Items in the G002 - Main Navigation will vary based on business requirements, the following will give a general expectation for the items in the utility navigation and are consistent across most sites and similar to emerson.com. The contents are both left and right aligned depending on what is added and how it is styled by the respective layout variant.

  • The second Item is the Single-Level Primary Navigation (G003B) Collection
  • The second to last Item in the Item List (second from right) is Search (if applicable to your site). This is an Action document type that has the ID set to "wcsextendedsearch". This is controlled by system code and is not directly editable by an author.
  • The last Item in the Item List (rightmost entry on the main nav) is the Shopping Cart (if applicable to your site). This is an Action document type that has the ID set to "wcMiniCart". This is controlled by system code and is not directly editable by an author.
  • Beyond the standard use noted above, other items can be added or substituted as approved by platform governance. A couple examples are given for illustration:
    • Spectrex.net does not have a catalog so they do not have the Shopping Cart
    • cashvalve.com has neither search nor a shopping cart, so the main navigation is only left aligned.
