The Value of Advanced Operator Displays

The Operator interface to your control system is an important part of the Operator’s ability to control the plant process. A well-designed display that encourages situational awareness allows for a more accurate and timely Operator response.

By using leading indicators, deviating process values can be easily identified and corrected before they alarm or trip. Alarms and other abnormal events should clearly stand out on the displays by using specific colors and shapes allowing for easy identification of a process change. Task oriented displays provide the information necessary for control during known situations. The use of permissive and shutdown displays shows the Operator specifically what is keeping the plant from starting up or what exactly caused the plant to shut down.

Display Design Services

Emerson will provide support to your display implementation team. For example, you may choose to use out-of-the-box dynamos or develop your own library for future use. Emerson can assist with Operator training and the introduction of the new displays to the plant Operators. Most Customers report benefits from improved situation awareness, such as decision speed and quality, within a few days. While it may take some time for experienced Operators to regain familiarity and adjust to fewer display changes, most new Operators report a very fast onboarding experience.
